Woldemar Prince of Lippe
Woldemar of Lippe (Günther Friedrich Woldemar; 18 April 1824 – 20 March 1895) was a prince who ruled the Principality of Lippe from 1875 until his death. He was born in Detmold as the third child of Leopold II, Prince of Lippe, and Princess Emilie of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen. Woldemar married Princess Sophie of Baden on 9 November 1858 in Karlsruhe.
After the death of his brother Leopold III on 8 December 1875, Woldemar succeeded him as Prince of Lippe. During his reign, he attended a gathering with German Emperor William II in Berlin in 1892, where he challenged the emperor's claim to be "Emperor of Germany," stating instead that the other sovereigns were his allies.
Woldemar died in Detmold and was succeeded by his brother Alexander. However, due to Alexander's mental illness and legal restrictions imposed in 1870 and 1893, a regency was necessary. In his will, Woldemar had appointed Prince Adolf of Schaumburg-Lippe as regent. This decision sparked a decade-long dispute between two branches of the House of Lippe: the Lippe-Biesterfelds and the Schaumburg-Lippes. The conflict was resolved in 1905.
Woldemar's life and reign were marked by his political stance against Emperor William II and the subsequent regency dispute, which had lasting implications for the Lippe dynasty.
