Vulcanus in Japan
The Vulcanus in Japan program, established in 1997 by the EU-Japan Centre for Industrial Cooperation, aims to foster industrial collaboration between Europe and Japan. It targets top EU students in Engineering, Science, or Architecture, typically from their final undergraduate year to the penultimate year of a PhD. Participants must demonstrate high proficiency in English.
The program combines a four-month intensive Japanese language course with an eight-month internship at a Japanese company. The language component provides daily instruction for those with little to no prior knowledge, covering basic communication and cultural insights. Seminars on Japanese culture, society, and economy supplement the training. Company visits and cultural activities like tea ceremonies further enhance understanding.
Eligibility requires EU citizenship, enrollment in relevant fields, and availability for a year-long commitment. Applications are reviewed first by the EU-Japan Centre, focusing on academic records, motivation, and international experience, before host companies make final selections. Participants receive a grant covering travel and living expenses, with accommodation provided by their host company.
The program aims to prepare future executives adept at navigating Japanese corporate culture through hands-on experience and cultural immersion.
