Pompano Beach Airpark, located one mile northeast of Pompano Beach's central business district in Broward County, Florida, is a public airport owned by the City of Pompano Beach. It was constructed during World War II as a Naval outlying landing field for Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale, now known as Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. The city acquired the airport under the Surplus Property Act of 1944 in 1947 and renamed it Pompano Beach Air Park, intending to limit its use to general aviation. Runway 15–33 was shortened from 5,000 feet to 4,418 feet in 1971 for this purpose. The airport spans 650 acres after several land transfers. Initial expansions brought the total to 1,035 acres by June 1948. Subsequent sales and transfers, including land for Pompano Beach Elementary School, Pompano Square Mall, and purchases by the Pompano Elks Club, reduced the size to its current 650 acres. Facilities include three asphalt runways: Runway 6/24 (4,001 ft), Runway 10/28 (3,502 ft), and Runway 15/33 (4,918 ft). The airport has an FAA contract tower and averages 465 daily aircraft operations, predominantly general aviation. Based aircraft total 131, with 71% single-engine, 17% multi-engine, 8% helicopters, and 4% jets. The Goodyear Blimp Spirit of Innovation is based here. Sheltair Aviation Services operates as the fixed-base operator. Aviation schools include Dare to Dream Aviation, Orange Wings Academy, Florida Aviation Academy, Learn to Fly Center, American Flyers, and Tailwheel Academy. Skymax provides charter services.
