Mohawk Valley Gateway Overlook
The Mohawk Valley Gateway Overlook is a pedestrian bridge in Amsterdam, New York, spanning 511 feet (156 m) over the Mohawk River, connecting Riverlink Park on the north shore to Bridge Street on the south shore. Construction began in June 2014 and it opened to the public in August 2016. The bridge is 30 feet wide and features trees, flowers, and engraved historical and cultural information on its decking and railings. It was funded primarily by $16.5 million from the Rebuild and Renew New York Transportation Bond Act of 2005, with additional $1.65 million for artistic elements provided by grants. The bridge's design, a curved "park over the river," was selected after public input from three initial designs proposed by Saratoga Associates. Artistic features were scaled back due to cost increases but included engraved concrete decking and plaques. The opening ceremony on August 31, 2016, featured several notable speakers, including New York Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul. Projections suggested the bridge could generate economic benefits if it attracted sufficient visitors. However, local opposition emerged in 2007-2009, with some advocating for redirecting funds to infrastructure or other projects like a walkway between Guy Park Manor and Riverlink Park. Despite this, the project was completed, winning awards including "Engineering Project of the Year" and a "Merit Award." Contractors involved included Saratoga Associates for design, Ammann & Whitney as engineers, and Kubricky Construction Corp. for construction.
