Lugar is a small village in East Ayrshire, Scotland, situated near Cumnock, Cronberry, Gaswater, and Kilmarnock. It was once served by the Mauchline and Muirkirk branch of the Glasgow and South Western Railway. Historically dominated by ironworks established in 1845 with several blast furnaces, the industry declined and closed in 1928, later repurposed by the National Coal Board.

The village grew around the ironworks, reaching a population peak of 1,891 by 1891. Key landmarks include the Lugar Institute (founded 1892), featuring educational and recreational facilities, and a church established in 1867. The village is also home to the Lugar Boswell Thistle Football Club, formed in 1878, and a scout troop.

Nearby, William Murdoch, who pioneered gas lighting, was born at Bello Mill Cottage. Geologically significant, the Lugar Sill—a Site of Special Scientific Interest—runs NE-SW, intruding igneous rock into local sandstone. Composed of layered Theralite, Picrite, and Lugarite, it is internationally studied.

Lugar's history reflects its industrial past and natural features, offering insights into Scotland's industrial and geological heritage.
