The United States Supreme Court cases are organized by volume in the U.S. Reports, each edited by a Reporter of Decisions. As of October 2019, there were 574 bound volumes and 14 additional volumes available as slip opinions. The editors and their tenures include: Alexander J. Dallas (1790–1800), William Cranch (1801–1815), Henry Wheaton (1816–1827), Richard Peters (1828–1842), Benjamin Chew Howard (1843–1860), Jeremiah S. Black (1861–1862), John William Wallace (1863–1874), William Tod Otto (1875–1883), J. C. Bancroft Davis (1883–1902), Charles Henry Butler (1902–1916), Ernest Knaebel (1916–1944), Walter Wyatt (1946–1963, retroactively editing volumes 322–325 for 1944–1946), Henry Putzel Jr. (1964–1979), Henry Curtis Lind (1979–1987), Frank D. Wagner (1987–2010), Christine Luchok Fallon (2011–2020), and Rebecca Anne Womeldorf (2021–present). The first volume of U.S. Reports predates the Supreme Court and does not include its decisions, as it was published by Alexander J. Dallas for volumes 1–4. Ernest Knaebel resigned in 1944, leaving the position vacant until Walter Wyatt began editing volumes 322–325 in 1946.
