LW1 classification

LW1 is a classification in para-alpine skiing for athletes with severe lower limb disabilities, including amputations or cerebral palsy. Athletes compete standing up, using skis, poles, and sometimes prosthetics, depending on their ability. The classification was historically grouped with other classes in events, but it has also competed separately, particularly in the 1990s.

The competition format involves factoring systems to ensure fairness across different classes. Results are calculated by multiplying race times by a class-specific factor, which adjusts for functional mobility differences. Notable competitors include Adam Hall and Kevin O'Sullivan from New Zealand, among others.

LW1 skiers have participated in various Paralympic Games and World Championships, with their inclusion varying depending on the event and year. For example, at the 2002 Winter Paralympics, LW1 was grouped with other classes for certain events, while at earlier competitions, they competed separately.
