Crawley was founded in the 13th century as a market town. The first Roman Catholic church in the town was opened in 1861. English Heritage has listed the building at Grade II for its architectural and historical importance. It served a large Roman Catholic worshipping community until 1980. The friary was closed in 1980 and demolished. Its location is now the site of a small park. The church is now a private family home. It is not known who currently lives in the nearby home. The building's name refers to St Francis, the patron of the friary. The current owner is Thomas McBride. A former friar, a former Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Delhi became the first Metropolitan Archbishop of Delhi. The post office is on the ground floor of the building.
