French ship Sphinx 1776

Sphinx was a 64 gun ship of the French Navy. She was built in Brest and was part of the Blue Squadron of theFrench Navy during the American War of Independence. She had a small gun complement to match 74-gun ships. Sphinx was eventually replaced by a much larger, 24-gunrier. After the war she was scrapped. A three-gun anti-submarine cruiser called Chateau de Lacle was built to carry British guns on a reef. In 1793 Sphinx turned into a floating battery. She then became a floating gun battery. But in 1784 she was too old and sunk. She later served with the Grand Orient. and fought in the Second World War. She became part of France's first squadron of frigates.
