David Douglas rower
David G. A. Douglas is an Australian former rower born on March 16, 1947, in Melbourne, Victoria. Educated at Scotch College, he began rowing there before joining the Mercantile Rowing Club, where he had a long association. Douglas represented Victoria in the men's eight at Interstate Regattas from 1967 to 1971, winning the King's Cup three times consecutively from 1969 to 1971. He made a comeback in 1980 and won another King's Cup.
Douglas was a five-time Australian national champion, winning a gold medal at the 1967 North American rowing championships and a silver medal at the 1968 Summer Olympics. In 1968, he won the Australian coxed four title with his crew. Internationally, he competed in the US and European Championships in 1967 as part of an all-Victorian crew. At the 1970 World Rowing Championships, he finished fifth in the men's eight.
After retiring, Douglas served as Chairman of selectors at Mercantile Rowing Club. In 2010, he was inducted into the Rowing Victoria Hall of Fame. His daughter Gina is a prominent rower who competed at six world championships and two Olympics. His son Robert also represented Australia in the men's eight at World Championships in 2001 and 2002.
