The title of Baron Glanusk was created in 1899 for Sir Joseph Bailey, 2nd Baronet, a Conservative Member of Parliament who represented Herefordshire and Hereford. His son, the second Baron, and grandson, the third Baron, both served as Lord Lieutenant of Brecknockshire. The fourth Baron, the first Baron's great-grandson, succeeded his cousin in 1948. As of 2010, the title is held by his son, the fifth Baron, who inherited it in 1997.

The Bailey baronetcy was established in 1852 for Joseph Bailey, an English ironmaster and Member of Parliament for Worcester and Breconshire. His grandson, Sir Joseph Russell Bailey, became the second Baronet and was elevated to the peerage as Baron Glanusk in 1899. The Hon. Bernard M. Bailey, a midshipman on HMS Defence, died at age 17 during the Battle of Jutland in World War I.

Glanusk Park served as the family residence until 1948 when the third Baron left it to his daughter, Dame Elizabeth Shân Legge-Bourke, who later became Lord Lieutenant of Powys. The succession line includes Joseph Russell Bailey (1st Baron), Joseph Henry Russell Bailey (2nd Baron), Wilfred Russell Bailey (3rd Baron), David Russell Bailey (4th Baron), and Christopher Russell Bailey (5th Baron). The heir apparent is the current Baron's son, Charles Henry Bailey.
