Anthony Van Bergen

Anthony Abraham Van Bergen (1786–December 27, 1859) was an American politician and judge from New York. Born in Catskill, NY, he was the only child of New York State Senator Peter A. Van Bergen and Hester Van Bergen. After his father's death in 1814, his mother remarried Dr. James Oliver in 1811. His paternal grandfather led a regiment in the Revolutionary War, while his maternal grandfather fought under his grandfather at Saratoga.

Van Bergen graduated from Union College in 1808 as part of the Philomathean Society. He served as a judge in Greene County Court and was the first president of the New York State Agricultural Society in 1832. In 1835, he represented Greene County in the New York State Assembly.

Married to Clarine Peck from April 19, 1806, they had ten children. Notable descendants include Dr. Daniel Van Bergen and Anthony T. Van Bergen, who married into European nobility. Through his youngest son, he became a grandfather of notable figures, including the Countess Antoinette Julia von Grote, whose great-grandson was Princess Marie of Wied.

Van Bergen's life reflects a blend of political service, family lineage, and significant familial connections spanning generations.
