Amadou Gon Coulibaly
Amadou Gon Coulibaly was a prominent Ivorian politician who served as Prime Minister of Côte d'Ivoire from 2017 until his death in 2020. He was the ruling party's candidate in the 2020 presidential election and was considered a strong contender. Previously, he held the position of Secretary General under President Alassane Ouattara from 2011 to 2017.
Coulibaly began his political career as a technical adviser to Prime Minister Ouattara in the early 1990s. He served in the National Assembly from 1995 to 1999 and again from 2011 until his death. Additionally, he was Mayor of Korhogo. He held the role of Minister of Agriculture from 2002 to 2010. After Ouattara became president in 2011, Coulibaly served as Secretary General of the presidency until 2017 when he was appointed Prime Minister, leading a smaller government with 28 ministers.
In 2017, he was designated First Vice-President of the Rally of the Republicans (RDR), the ruling party. Despite tensions within the governing coalition in July 2018, Coulibaly was re-appointed to form a new government after President Ouattara dissolved the previous one.
Coulibaly had a history of heart issues, undergoing surgery in 2012. In May 2020, he traveled to France for a medical exam and returned on July 2nd. He passed away during a cabinet meeting on July 8th at the age of 61.
