Alan Steinberg
Dr. Alan L. Steinberg (1944-2023) was an American author known for his contributions to literature and education. He wrote the libretto for *The Falcon and the Sailor Boy*, an opera composed by Paul Siskind, which premiered in 2006 at SUNY Potsdam and starred Steinberg's former student Stephanie Blythe.
Steinberg earned a B.A. in English from the University of Hartford (1965), an M.A. in English from Washington State University (1967), and a PhD in English from Carnegie Mellon University (1975), submitting his collection *Ceremonies* as his dissertation. He taught writing and literature courses at several institutions, including Wenatchee Community College, Paul Smith's College, Marist College, Idaho State University, and SUNY Potsdam, where he served as the coordinator of the writing program and was known for his course on Western film and novel genres.
As an author, Steinberg published works in various forms, including plays, short fiction, novels, and poetry collections. His notable works include *The Road to Corinth* (1984), *Divided* (1996), *Cry of the Leopard* (1997), and *fathering* (2000). He also contributed essays, stories, poems, and dramatic pieces to over 50 journals, earning numerous prizes. Steinberg reflected on his teaching career and love for different regions, including New York's North Country, where he found inspiration in the beauty and challenges of the area.
