The 1927 NC State Wolfpack football team, coached by Gus Tebell in his third season, finished with a 9–1 record and outscored opponents 216–69. They tied with Georgia Tech and Tennessee for the Southern Conference title, boasting the only unbeaten and untied conference record. The team was led by All-Southern running back Jack McDowall, who was later inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

The season began with a 39–0 victory over Elon but suffered its only loss in Week 2, falling 0–20 to Furman. The Wolfpack rebounded with an 18–6 win over Clemson, where McDowall’s play set up all scores despite not scoring himself. They then defeated Wake Forest 30–7, with McDowall throwing passes and returning a punt 60 yards for a touchdown.

In Week 5, NC State beat Florida 12–6 in Tampa. McDowall was instrumental, including a 75-yard interception return for the deciding score. The Wolfpack also defeated North Carolina 19–6, with McDowall scoring twice, and Davidson 25–6, featuring a 65-yard run by McDowall.

The team secured a thrilling 20–18 victory over Duke, with McDowall’s two drop kicks proving decisive. They shut out South Carolina 34–0 and concluded the season with a 19–0 win over Michigan State on a muddy field, where McDowall was cited as the best player in his final game.

McDowall earned All-Southern honors, and the team was coached by Gus Tebell with assistants Butch Slaughter and Doc Sermon.
