1885 Southern Rugby Union season
The 1885 Southern Rugby Union season was the 12th Sydney Rugby Premiership and the third competition for the Gardiner Cup. It ran from May to September, with Sydney University emerging as undefeated premiers, winning the Gardiner Challenge Cup. The season saw three junior clubs—Arfoma, St. Leonards, and Newtown—elevated to Senior status, increasing the number of competing teams to eight. Games were not evenly distributed among clubs, and the competition lacked organized rounds or an official points ladder.
The Association Cricket Ground’s unavailability disrupted matches, leading to crowd interference on unfenced fields. The Agricultural Society later provided their ground, but simultaneous games caused confusion. Sydney University’s consistent form and organization led to their success, with a stable lineup contributing to their undefeated cup campaign. Wallaroo showed occasional brilliance but inconsistency due to a heavy 20-game schedule, finishing second after winning 8 of 14 Cup games.
Burwood, the previous season’s premiers, were considered well-rounded and finished with a draw against Sydney University, showcasing their potential. Junior clubs Balmain Wellington and Rosedale went undefeated in their division. The season also saw intercolonial matches between New South Wales and Queensland, with Queensland winning the first match 14-0 and NSW responding with a 12-2 victory in the second. Controversies arose over player selections for these representative games.
