Alamo New Mexico
Alamo (Navajo: Tʼiistoh) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Socorro County, New Mexico, United States. It is the largest community on the Alamo Navajo Indian Reservation and had a population of 1,085 at the 2010 census. The CDP covers an area of 39.7 square miles (103 km²), all land.
The demographics from the 2000 census show a population of 1,183 people, with a high concentration of Native Americans (94.59%). The median age was 22 years, indicating a young population. Many households (59.8%) included children under 18, and family structures were predominantly married couples or female-led households.
Economically, the Alamo Navajo School Board (ANSB) was the sole employer by 2012, serving as the de facto local government. Educationally, Alamo has its own school, the Alamo Navajo Community School, which operates under the Bureau of Indian Education and offers K-12 education. Historically, students attended distant schools but transitioned to nearby Magdalena Municipal Schools after 1957.
The median household income was $15,347, with 65.9% of families below the poverty line.
