Captain Savage and his Leatherneck Raiders
"Captain Savage and his Leatherneck Raiders was a World War II comic series published by Marvel from January 1968 to March 1970, spanning nineteen issues. Created by Gary Friedrich and Dick Ayers as a spin-off of *Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos*, the title changed to *Captain Savage and his Battlefield Raiders* with issue #9. Launched during an embargo that allowed Marvel to publish more titles, the series focused on the elite Marine Corps team in the Pacific theater. Sales were decent, though a proposed follow-up featuring Savage as a submarine commander was not pursued. Pierre Comtois, author of *Marvel Comics in the 1970s*, praised Dick Ayers' artwork and noted smooth dialogue but suggested cancellation due to anti-war sentiment affecting war comics. The series is mentioned alongside another spin-off, *Combat Kelly and the Deadly Dozen*."
