1976 Giro d'Italia was the 59th running of the Giro. The race was won by Italian Felice Gimondi. A total of 120 riders from twelve teams entered the 22-stage race. The Giro was marred by the death of Spanish rider Juan Manuel Santisteban during the first stage. The general classification was the most important, calculated by adding each rider's finishing times on each stage. It is considered one of cycling's Grand Tours. A time trial in Stage 7 was won By Francesco Moser, who went on to win the general classification. Eddy Merckx finished his last Giro by finishing 2nd, his highest stage placing in his remarkable career. This was the last GIRO for four cyclists to die.
