Hollygrove was once a piece of the McCarty plantation, grew out of the town of Carrollton, a suburb outside of New Orleans. The neighborhood is home to generations of families, creating a strong sense of place and community. Before Hurricane Katrina, over half of the homes in Hollygrove were owner-occupied. The Ochner Medical Complex is just over the Orleans/Jefferson Parish line and is a major employer and benefit to the area. The number of total year crimes in New Orleans had increased by 12% in the early 2000s. In the last decade, crime rates have dropped dramatically and the area has become a diverse neighborhood of working class individuals from all walks of life and property values have increased dramatically. The U.S. Census Bureau says the district has a total area of 0.62 square miles (1.6 km2) and has an elevation of 0 feet (0.0 m) According to the United States Census Bureau, the neighborhood has 6,919 people residing in it, with 1,655 families and 1,803 families.
