  • Under the Piano* (1995) is a television film directed by Stefan Scaini, with Kevin Sullivan as executive producer. The movie is loosely based on the lives of Dolly and Henrietta Giardini, whose story was featured on *20/20*. It follows Franny Basilio, portrayed by Amanda Plummer, who tries to protect her autistic savant sister Rosetta (Megan Follows) from their mother Regina (Teresa Stratas), an opera singer turned stay-at-home mom. While Rosetta has extraordinary musical talent and memory skills due to autism, Regina rejects her daughter’s abilities and considers institutionalization or lobotomy as solutions. Franny struggles against her mother's wishes, leading to family conflict and Rosetta's hospitalization.

The film explores themes of family dynamics, mental health, and the impact of autism on personal and familial relationships. It was shot in black and white and earned several awards, including Gemini Awards for Best Costume Design, Best Supporting Actress (Teresa Stratas), and Best Sound. It also received a Cable Ace Nomination for Best International Dramatic Special.

The cast includes James Carroll as Nick, John Juliani as Frank, and numerous others in supporting roles. The film’s score was composed by Dory Chan, and the director of photography was Michael Heimann.
