West Texas League
The West Texas League was a Class D minor league baseball organization that operated from 1920 to 1922 and again from 1928 to 1929. During its initial run (1920–1922), the league featured teams such as the Abilene Eagles, Ranger Nitros, Mineral Wells Resorters, Cisco Scouts, Gorman Buddies/Sweetwater Swatters, and Eastland Judges in 1920. The Abilene Eagles won the championship that year by defeating the Ranger Nitros. In 1921, the Sweetwater Swatters, Eagles, Resorters, Nitros, and Scouts returned, while the Mineral Wells Resorters moved to Ballinger as the Ballinger Bearcats, and the Cisco Scouts became the Cisco Orphans. The Eastland Judges left, replaced by the San Angelo Bronchos. Abilene won their second consecutive title, defeating Sweetwater. By 1922, new teams like the Amarillo Gassers, Lubbock Hubbers, Clovis Buzzers, and Stamford Colonels joined, with Ballinger, Cisco, and Mineral Wells no longer represented. Amarillo won the championship that year, beating Clovis.
The league resumed play in 1928–1929. In 1928, teams included the San Angelo Red Snappers, Coleman Bobcats, Abilene Aces, Midland Colts, Lubbock Hubbers, and Hamlin Pied Pipers/Big Spring Springers, with Lubbock being the only returning team from 1922. San Angelo won the championship by defeating Abilene. In 1929, new teams like the San Angelo Sheep Herders and Big Spring Cowboys joined, along with the return of the Ballinger Bearcats. Coleman won that year’s title.
Cities represented during the league's existence included Abilene, Amarillo, Ballinger, Big Spring, Cisco, Clovis, Coleman, Eastland, Gorman, Hamlin, Lubbock, Midland, Mineral Wells, Ranger, San Angelo, Stamford, and Sweetwater.
