Asymmetry of the Intertropical Convergence Zone

The Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), often referred to as the Doldrums by sailors, is asymmetrical and does not lie exactly on the geographic equator. This deviation from symmetry can be explained by two main factors: the distribution of continents and sea surface temperatures (SSTs).
These factors—continental geometry and SST asymmetry—contribute to the observed asymmetry of the ITCZ.
