Norland College
Norland College, located in Bath, Somerset, UK, is a renowned higher education provider specializing in childcare. It trains professionals such as nannies, nursery nurses, and early years educators, who work globally. The college offers the BA (Hons) in Early Years Development and Learning and the prestigious Norland Diploma. In 2019, it was granted Taught Degree Awarding Powers, enabling it to assess students internally.
Founded in 1892 by Emily Ward, Norland emphasizes affectionate care and child-focused training, avoiding corporal punishment. Over its history, it has relocated several times, including notable periods in Chislehurst and Denford Park, before settling in Bath. The college began admitting male trainees in 1999 and undergraduates in 2012.
A documentary titled "Nanny School" (2005–2006) featured Norland's training. Although it opened a nursery in 2009, financial challenges led to its closure in 2013.
Norland’s curriculum combines classroom learning with practical placements in families and institutions, including the Royal United Hospital maternity ward. Students also receive tactical driving and self-defense training for high-profile clients. Upon completing their BA and a fourth-year placement called the Newly Qualified Nanny (NQN) year, graduates earn their Norland Diploma.
Additionally, Norland functions as an agency placing its graduates in long-term roles with families.
