4th Brigade Combat Team 1st Armored Division United States
The 4th Brigade Combat Team (BCT), 1st Armored Division "Highlanders" was an armored brigade under the U.S. Army's 1st Armored Division. Formed in 2005 as part of the 1st Cavalry Division, it transitioned to the 1st Armored Division in 2008 and was later reorganized into the 3rd BCT "Bulldog" in 2015 before being deactivated. The brigade's nickname, "Highlander," referenced both the West Texas Franklin Mountains and historical ties to World War II campaigns in Italy.
Equipped with M1A2SEP Abrams tanks, M2A3 & M3A3 Bradley vehicles, and other military hardware, the brigade comprised units such as the 2nd Squadron of the 13th Cavalry Regiment, the 4th Battalion of the 6th Infantry Regiment, and the 1st Battalion of the 77th Armor Regiment. Their insignia featured crossed Scottish broadswords symbolizing their Highland heritage.
The brigade deployed to Iraq twice: first in 2009 under Operation Iraqi Freedom focusing on security force assistance, and again in 2011 as part of Operation New Dawn. After returning from Iraq, they were reorganized into security forces advising teams for Afghanistan, with their last deployment concluding in June 2013. The brigade's final structure included units like the 2nd Engineer Battalion "Sapper Steel" after a prior inactivation and restructuring in 2015.
