2023 Challenge Cup final
The 2023 Challenge Cup Final was the 122nd edition of the Rugby Football League's knock-out competition and marked its return to Wembley Stadium after being held at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2022. The match featured Leigh Leopards and Hull KR, with Leigh securing a 17-16 victory, their first title since 1971. The game went into golden point extra time after Matt Parcell scored a last-minute try for Hull KR, leveling the scores at 16-all after 80 minutes.
In extra time, both teams had opportunities to win through drop goals, but it was Lachlan Lam who kicked the decisive drop goal on 83 minutes to seal Leigh's victory. This final was notable as the first since 1986 not featuring Leeds, St Helens, Wigan, or Warrington. It also marked the first time the men's and women's finals were held at Wembley on the same day, August 12, 2023.
Leigh Leopards, a newly promoted side in 2023, reached their third final and first in 52 years. Hull KR, competing in their eighth Challenge Cup final, had previously won only once, in 1979-80. Pre-match, St Helens won the women's Challenge Cup final 22-8 against Leeds Rhinos, securing their sixth title and third consecutive win. Traffic on the M1 caused delays for an estimated 20,000 ticketholders. Post-match, Wembley hosted additional finals, including the Year 7 boys' schools' final and the 1895 Cup Final, where Halifax Panthers defeated Batley Bulldogs 12-10. A trophy parade was held in Leigh to celebrate their victory.
