William E. Sheridan Jr., born on January 11, 1942, and passing away on December 26, 2020, at age 78, was a prominent American basketball coach known for his success in the Netherlands and with the Dutch national team. He grew up in West Brighton, Staten Island, playing basketball for St. Peter's Boys High School and baseball as a pitcher. Sheridan served in the U.S. Marine Corps, reaching the rank of captain.

His coaching career began as an assistant at Virginia Technical Institute. In 1973, he became head coach of Punch Delft, leading them to a 16-game win streak and the NBB Cup victory, with two Eredivisie titles in his first two seasons. He later coached EBBC Den Bosch, securing another Eredivisie title before moving to Donar. During his tenure, he led Den Bosch to the EuroBasket 1975 semifinals, where the Netherlands finished tenth.

Sheridan also coached the Brighton Bears in the UK but they withdrew from the National Basketball League in 1987. In 1974, he began coaching the Netherlands national team, securing his first international win against Denmark and achieving notable success in European competitions.

In his personal life, Sheridan met his wife in Delft, with whom he had three children. His legacy as a coach in the Netherlands remains significant, marked by multiple league titles and international achievements.
