2017 Rugby Africa season
The 2017 Rugby Africa season featured a series of rugby union tournaments organized by Rugby Africa. The top-tier event was the Gold Cup, a six-team competition (Kenya, Namibia, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Senegal, and Tunisia) held in a round-robin format from June to August 2017. This tournament doubled as qualification for the 2019 Rugby World Cup, with the last-place team being relegated to the Silver Cup.
The Silver Cup, a tier 2 event, included Botswana, Ivory Coast, Madagascar, and Morocco. It was held in July 2017, with the winner earning promotion to the Gold Cup for the next season.
The Bronze Cup, a tier 3 event, featured six teams divided into two groups: Group North (Algeria, Nigeria, Algeria, and Cameroon) and Group South (Zambia, Mauritius, and Rwanda). Due to organizational issues, Cameroon was suspended, and Nigeria withdrew from the competition. Algeria faced Zambia in a one-off match on 4 November.
The Regional Challenge, the lowest tier, involved twelve teams divided into four groups across West Africa, Central Africa, and Southern Africa. Matches were held in various locations, with some teams facing suspension or forfeits due to non-attendance.
In addition to the main competitions, an Under-20 tournament was held in April, and a rugby sevens tournament involving twelve teams was scheduled for November, along with plans for a women's sevens tournament.
