Prior to 17th century: 5,000 BCE - The sea still reaches the foot of the cliffs of Toompea. 3,000 CE - First signs of a settlement in Tallinn. 750 BCE - fortified settlement first built at Iru, at the Pirita river bend. It is used until the 5th century BCE and then again during the 4th−2nd century BCE. 450 CE - Iru hillfort is built at th of the former fortified settlement. 9th century - Scandinavians (Varangians) start making trade voyages to East Slavs along the Gulf of Finland. 10th century – Reval becomes part of the Hanseatic League. 1569 - Reval besieged by Russians. 1577 – Tallinn becomes a dominion of Sweden. 1638 - Gymnasium (school) established.
