Supreme Lanka Coalition

The Uttara Lanka Sabhagaya, also known as the Supreme Lanka Coalition, is a political alliance in Sri Lanka formed in 2022. It consists of seven leftist and nationalist parties that previously belonged to the SLPP-led Sri Lanka People’s Freedom Alliance (SLPFA) but defected to the opposition during the 2022 economic and political crises. The coalition held its first conference on September 4, 2022, with Wimal Weerawansa, leader of the National Freedom Front (NFF) and former cabinet minister, serving as chairman.

The member parties of the Supreme Lanka Coalition include the Democratic Left Front, Lanka Sama Samaja Party, Communist Party of Sri Lanka, National Freedom Front, Piwithuru Hela Urumaya, Vijaya Dharani National Council, Yuthukama National Organization, and Sri Lanka Mahajana Pakshaya. These parties were part of the SLPFA, which was formed in 2019 under former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to support Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s successful presidential bid. The alliance won a landslide victory in the 2020 parliamentary elections, securing 145 seats.

However, by 2021-2022, the Rajapaksa government faced declining popularity due to economic mismanagement and nepotism. On April 5, 2022, 16 MPs aligned with the SLPFA became independent, with 15 later forming the Supreme Lanka Coalition. The coalition launched on September 4, 2022, shortly after 13 SLPP MPs defected to the opposition. The group has considered collaborating with Dullas Alahapperuma, who ran unsuccessfully in the 2022 presidential election. Chairman Wimal Weerawansa stated the coalition plans to contest upcoming local elections as a standalone party.
