Mount Royal Cougars mens ice hockey
The Mount Royal Cougars men's ice hockey team represents Mount Royal University and competes in U Sports as part of the Canada West Universities Athletic Association conference. The team plays its home games at the Flames Community Arena in Calgary, Alberta. Historically, the Cougars' roots trace back to the 1950s when, as "Mount Royal Junior College," they competed in the Calgary Junior B Hockey League, winning a championship in 1954. However, the team disbanded after 1957. In 1964, Mount Royal joined the Western Inter-College Conference (WICC) and won two league titles within its first five years. The program moved to the Highwood Hockey League in 1969 and later to the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) in 1970, but faced eligibility issues due to overage players. The team transitioned back to the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) in 1972, winning multiple championships. Despite a period of decline and suspensions, the program rebounded by the late 1980s, capturing its first intermediate national championship in 1988 and three more titles by the turn of the century. The program's last national title was in 2001. In 2012, Mount Royal University transitioned to senior-level hockey in Canada West. While the team achieved a winning season in 2015 and reached the conference postseason for the first time, it has yet to advance beyond the semifinals.
