Jamie Maddison
James Benjamin Maddison, born on July 9, 1988, is an English explorer, equestrian Long Rider (assoc.), and editor of Sidetracked magazine. He is renowned for his Central Asia explorations. His first expedition was to the Djangart Valley in Kyrgyzstan's Tian Shan mountains. Subsequent expeditions include living with Kirghiz hunters in Tajikistan, archaeological discoveries at Bazar Dara, a camel-supported run across Uzbekistan's Red Sands Desert, documenting Kazakh eagle hunters in Mongolia, and winter packrafting down Mongolia's Khovd River.
In 2013, Maddison and Matthew Traver completed a 750-mile, 63-day horse ride from Ust-Kamenogorsk to Almaty, honoring Sir Charles Howard-Bury's centenary journey. They received the British-Kazakh Society's award for furthering UK-Kazakhstan relations at the House of Commons. Maddison also earned the Sir Peter Holmes Memorial Award for his Asian travels.
In 2014, he led the first crossing of Betpak-Dala (Steppe of Misfortune) from Lake Balkash to the Sarysu River, running 190 miles over eight days with local assistance and funding from HOM. In 2017, he made the first on-foot crossing of the Saryesik-Atyrau Desert, running 70 miles in under 30 hours amid 36°C heat, sponsored by Christopher Ward.
Maddison is a journalist, having written on Armenian deforestation and Lake Sevan's environmental issues. He previously edited Sidetracked magazine and presented for Sidetracked TV. Now, he works as a content marketing strategist in London and motivational speaker. Maddison married on December 15, 2018.
