GameFace Labs

GameFace Labs is an American technology company founded in 2013 by Edward Mason, specializing in hardware and software for consumer virtual reality. Headquartered in San Francisco with international offices in London, the company is a founding member of the Open Source Virtual Reality (OSVR) project and the Immersive Technology Alliance. In December 2015, it joined Valve’s OpenVR ecosystem. The company’s first product is a standalone headset powered by an Nvidia Tegra system-on-chip (SoC), eliminating the need for a tethered connection to a computer or console. At Insomnia Gaming Festival 49 in 2013, GameFace Labs unveiled its first prototype, featuring a 720p LCD display and Nvidia Tegra 3 SoC. By CES 2014, the prototype was updated with a 1080p OLED display and Tegra 4 SoC. In June 2014, the company introduced its user interface, allowing in-virtual-environment app launching and cross-platform collaboration. It also showcased the Mk V prototype at E3 2014, featuring a 1440p Samsung-supplied display and Nvidia’s Tegra K1 SoC, which supported DirectX 11, OpenGL 4.4, and Google Cardboard content. At E3 2017, GameFace Labs demoed its seventh prototype, offering dual OLED displays, low persistence technology, and 6DoF positional tracking via wireless IR beacons. In January 2018, it revealed an ARM-based implementation of Valve’s Lighthouse technology with custom firmware. The company also introduced a developer platform enabling faster content sharing.
