Canterbury Law Courts

The Canterbury Law Courts, also known as the Canterbury Combined Court Centre, is a court complex located at Chaucer Road in Canterbury, England. It serves both as a Crown Court handling criminal cases and a County Court managing civil matters.

Historically, court sessions in Canterbury were conducted in the Guildhall until 1971 when a dedicated magistrates' court was established in Broad Street. However,随着案件数量的增加,新的法院设施成为必要。The site selected for the new courthouse was part of the former Chaucer Barracks, which had been a military hospital during World War II and later converted to military accommodation.

Designed by the Property Services Agency in a postmodern style, the new building features grey flint brickwork and a symmetrical frontage on Chaucer Road. The design includes a central gabled porch with a wooden canopy, a glass atrium, and Royal coat of arms. Internally, it houses ten courtrooms.

Notable cases include the trial of Callum Wheeler in July 2022 for the murder of police community support officer Julia James.
