8th Ersatz Division German Empire
The 8th Ersatz Division was formed in August 1914 from 14 brigade replacement battalions across various regions including Württemberg, Hesse, Rhine Province, Hesse-Nassau, and Alsace-Lorraine. Initially a composite unit with contributions from 30 infantry regiments, it later became associated with Württemberg, being renamed the Royal Württemberg Division in February 1917 before becoming the 243rd Infantry Division in April.
The division fought in several key battles: the Battle of Nancy-Epinal in 1914 and trench operations between Meuse and Moselle Rivers (Priest's Forest) from September 1914 to October 1916, followed by actions at the Somme in October 1916. After returning to Priest's Forest, it was reorganized into the 243rd Infantry Division.
Throughout its evolution, the division saw structural changes, including shifts towards specific regiments and an increase in engineer units. Allied intelligence recognized its effectiveness.
