37th Infantry Presidential Guard Battalion
The 37th Infantry Battalion "Guardia Presidencial" (Presidential Guard Battalion) is an elite unit of the Colombian Army, part of the 5th Division. Its primary mission is to provide security for the President of Colombia, his family, and the Casa de Nariño presidential palace. The battalion was established in 1916 and has a rich historical legacy, with its origins tracing back to the early 20th century.
The battalion is composed of 1,400 personnel, including officers, non-commissioned officers (NCOs), soldiers, and civilian staff. It includes several specialized companies: the Fergusson Company (ceremonial duties), Córdoba Infantry, Rondón Cavalry, Ricaurte Artillery, Caldas Engineering, and others. These units are responsible for palace security, ceremonies, and other official events.
One of its most notable traditions is the Changing of the Guard ceremony, held three times a week at the Casa de Nariño. This 105-year-old tradition involves the Fergusson Company, the battalion's military band, and the Corps of Drums. The battalion also participates in state visits, parades, and other high-profile events.
The Presidential Guard is known for its distinctive uniforms, which include a dark blue tunic with gold buttons, spiked helmets adorned with the Colombian coat of arms, and ceremonial attire inspired by 19th-century designs used during the War of Independence. The honor guard carries replica muskets from the same period.
The battalion's motto is "En Defensa del Honor Hasta la Muerte" ("In Defense of Honor Till Death"), reflecting its commitment to protecting the nation's symbols and leaders.
