Sir Osmond Esmonde 12th Baronet
Sir Osmond Thomas Grattan Esmonde, 12th Baronet (4 April 1896 – 22 July 1936) was an Irish diplomat and Cumann na nGaedheal (and later Fine Gael) politician. After the 1916 Easter Rising, he joined Sinn Féin and campaigned at the 1918 general election for Roger Sweetman in Wexford North, even though his father was the sitting MP and Irish Parliamentary Party candidate. In late 1920 he was dispatched to try and gain recognition for Ireland from members of the British Commonwealth. He was detained for two days before being allowed entry, only to be arrested on 4 April on charges of sedition. He did not contest the 1927 general election but did not return to the 6th Dáil until June 1927. By 1933 he had become part of the Comrades Association Association (better known as the Blueshirts), which had merged with the CumannNaNGaedhael to become Fine Gael. He died in 1936 at the age of 69. He is buried in Dublin's Glasnevin Cemetery. He had a son and a daughter, both of whom died in childhood.
