Deadwood, South Dakota, a historic mining town, once thrived with a vibrant Chinatown established by Chinese immigrants who arrived during the mining boom of the late 19th century. Notable figures like Wing Tsue contributed significantly to the community despite facing discrimination. However, the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 severely impacted the community, leading to population decline as many left due to both the act and economic hardships exacerbated by the Panic of 1893. This economic crisis caused mine closures and further exodus, with only a few remaining by the early 20th century; the last individual departed in 1931. Despite this decline, Deadwood has survived and flourished as a tourist destination, now a national historic landmark. Ongoing archaeological efforts aim to uncover more about its Chinatown history, preserving the memory of this once-thriving community.
