Barry Thomas Smitherman is a lawyer, former banker and former head of the Texas Railroad Commission. A Republican, he was appointed to the commission by former governor Rick Perry in July 2011. Smithermans ran for Texas attorney general in 2013. His first book, If Jesus Were an Investment Banker, was published in 2004. He has been criticised by conservative groups. Smotherman was appointed by Rick Perry as the chairman of the Railroad Commission in July 2007. He was elected chairman in February 2012. He also was the Republican nominee for the state senate in 2012. His term expired in January 2015. His wife, Pamela, is also a lawyer and a former State Railroad Commission member. Smatherman is married and has a daughter.
