Advanced traveller information system
An Advanced Traveller Information System (ATIS) is designed to assist travelers by providing real-time information to navigate from their starting point to destination efficiently. It gathers data either through in-vehicle sensors or traffic management centers, offering insights such as incident locations, weather conditions, optimal routes, recommended speeds, and lane restrictions via the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). ATIS can be categorized into public, private, or hybrid systems, delivering information through various channels like television, radio, computer applications, mobile phones with mapping capabilities, in-vehicle displays, variable-message signs, or kiosks located at transportation hubs. Examples of ATIS implementations include Australia's Smartraveller service, the United States' 511 system influenced by European models, Portugal's START program incorporating Rome2rio, and Iran's Radio-Payam broadcasting traffic updates. Additionally, systems like DriveBC in Canada and Malaysia's Integrated Transport Information System exemplify further applications of ATIS technology.
