West Vancouver Police Department
The West Vancouver Police Department (WVPD) serves the District of West Vancouver, British Columbia. Its operations include four Patrol Teams, each led by a Sergeant and overseen by a Staff Sergeant. These teams are supported by specialized units such as Traffic, Community Policing/School Liaison, Records, Surveillance, Intel., Victim Services, and the Major Investigations Team for serious crimes. Homicides in the area are investigated by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), which includes a WVPD member.
The department also collaborates with regional units like the Integrated Road Safety Unit, Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit, and others. Civilian employees and volunteers contribute to its functions.
Historically, the WVPD was established in 1912 with John Teare as the first constable and later chief of police. The department initially operated from an upstairs room in the original municipal hall.
The Student Work Advisory Team involves student volunteers assisting at community events like the annual police carnival and crime prevention initiatives under Cpl. Kellie English.
Controversies include the 2007 hiring of Kash Heed as Chief Constable following Scott Armstrong's termination due to internal issues, and a 2009 incident where three off-duty officers were arrested for racial abuse and robbery. WVPD officer Griffin Gillan was convicted of robbery and assault but remained with the department after disciplinary actions.
The WVPD collaborates with regional law enforcement through integrated units and relies on both civilian staff and volunteers to support its operations.
