Trolleybuses in Basel
The Basel trolleybus system, operated by Basler Verkehrs-Betriebe (BVB), was part of the public transport network in Basel, Switzerland, from 1941 until its closure in 2008. Over nearly six decades, it integrated with other networks, including the Basel Regional S-Bahn and tramways, to form an all-four style scheme.
The system initially consisted of three lines: line 34 was converted to motorbus operation in 2000, followed by line 33 in 2004. By 2008, only line 31 remained, which closed after a failed popular initiative to save the trolleybuses.
A total of 52 trolleybuses were used, with two acquired second-hand from Kaiserslautern. Some retired vehicles were transferred to cities in Bulgaria and Romania, while trolleybus no. 358 is now at the RétroBus Léman museum in Lausanne.
The depot was located at Rankstrasse garage on line 31, connected via non-revenue wires to Basel Badischer Bahnhof for line 33. The system's closure marked the end of trolleybus services in Basel after nearly 60 years.
