Les Platons
Les Platons is the highest point in Jersey, a British Crown dependency, with an elevation of 136 metres (446 ft). It is situated in the Vingtaine de la Ville-Évêque within the parish of Trinity. The site features radio transmitters and a radar station.
In October 1955, Les Platons became the location for transmitting BBC Television (later renamed BBC One) to the Channel Islands via the VHF 405 line service on channel 4, commencing on 3 October 1955. Prior to this, the Channel Islands received BBC national radio stations through AM signals from mainland England. FM transmissions began on 16 October 1961, initially broadcasting Home, Light, and Third Programmes, which later evolved into Radio 2 (on 89.6 MHz), Radio 3 (on 94.75 MHz), and Radio 4 (on 97.1 MHz). In March 1992, frequency adjustments were made to accommodate new services.
The introduction of Independent Television (ITV) to the Channel Islands occurred in September 1962 via the nearby Fremont Point transmitter, which aired Channel Television. This site later became the primary television transmitter for the region. UHF 625 television was introduced here in 1976 alongside BBC2 and colour TV.
Les Platons ceased television transmissions in 1985 with the UK's discontinuation of VHF 405 line services, transitioning to a dedicated radio transmitter site thereafter.
