Killing of Jeremy Mardis

Police shot dead Jeremy Mardis, 6, on November 3, 2015, in Marksville, Louisiana. Marksville had been involved in a series of running conflicts between officials. The shooting happened on the same night three police officers were suspended without pay. Two of those officers were arrested as a result of the shooting. The first was sentenced to 40 years in prison, with the possibility of parole after 20 years. The other was sentenced in September to 7 years, and paroled after serving a quarter of that sentence. The city has an annual average population of 5,702. The shootings are not unusual, as Marksville has seen numerous shootings in recent years.
