José Fernando de Abascal y Sousa was a Spanish military officer and colonial administrator in America. He fought hard to suppress the independence movements in Spanish America. Abascal's last cargo of black slaves in Peru was landed in 1806. He was imprisoned during his voyage from Spain to Peru in 1811. In 1812 and 1813 he fought to keep the liberal Constitution of Spain in Spain. For more information on Abascal, or to order a copy of his life, visit his biography at the University of Madrid.
