ASM International, originally established in 1913 as the Steel Treaters Club in Detroit, has evolved over the decades to become a global organization for materials engineers and scientists. The society, known as ASM International since 1986, currently boasts 20,000 members worldwide. Its charitable arm, the ASM Materials Education Foundation, operates ASM Materials Camps annually for high school students and teachers, aiming to educate the public about materials science and encourage career paths in this field.

ASM provides extensive resources including technical journals, books, and databases, while hosting significant conferences such as the annual IMAT event. Six affiliate societies fall under its umbrella: The Heat Treating Society (HTS), The Thermal Spray Society (TSS), The International Metallographic Society (IMS), The Electronic Device Failure Analysis Society (EDFAS), The Failure Analysis Society (FAS), and The International Organization on Shape Memory and Superelastic Technology (SMST). Each affiliate contributes specialized technical content and hosts international events.

ASM also publishes several journals, including *Alloy Digest*, *International Materials Reviews*, *Journal of Failure Analysis & Prevention*, *Journal of Materials Engineering and Performance*, *Journal of Phase Equilibria and Diffusion*, *Journal of Thermal Spray Technology*, *Metallography, Microstructure, and Analysis*, and *Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A and B*. Additionally, the society's headquarters features a notable geodesic dome structure.
