The 1974 Individual Speedway World Championship, held in Göteborg, Sweden, was the 29th edition of the event. Anders Michanek of Sweden secured the world title by scoring a maximum 15 points at the Ullevi stadium, defeating Ivan Mauger of France, who finished second with 11 points after winning a runoff against Sören Sjösten of Sweden, also on 11 points. Defending champion Jerzy Szczakiel did not qualify for the final after finishing last in the 2nd Continental Semi-Final. Ole Olsen of Denmark struggled during the event, failing to complete most races.

The competition format saw changes in 1974, with Sweden receiving five direct spots in the World Final, while other nations had to qualify through the European route. Key stages included the British/Commonwealth preliminaries, Continental quarter-finals, Nordic final, and Swedish qualification. The European Final was held at Wembley Stadium on August 31, determining the top 11 riders for the World Final.

The World Final took place on September 6 at Ullevi stadium in Göteborg, with Michanek emerging victorious.
