Decanter magazine
Decanter is a wine and lifestyle media brand owned by Future plc, offering a range of platforms including a print and digital magazine, fine wine tasting events, a news website, a subscription service called Decanter Premium, and the Decanter World Wine Awards. Founded in London in 1975, it is the oldest consumer wine publication in the UK, comparable to the Wine Spectator in the US. The magazine is published monthly in around 90 countries, including China, and features contributions from Masters of Wine. Its content focuses on wines available in the UK and US, targeting consumers while also attracting traders and producers. Each issue includes news, commentary, travel surveys, interviews, analysis, market reports, and in-depth reviews of wines from two regions at a time. Decanter's readership is younger, with 41% under 45 years old.
Decanter.com, launched in 1999, is one of the most visited wine websites globally. The subscription service, Decanter Premium, was introduced in 2017. The Decanter World Wine Awards, founded in 2004 by Decanter and Stephen Spurrier, is the world's largest wine competition, with over 18,000 entries from around 60 countries annually. Judging involves expert panels evaluating wines based on country, region, color, style, vintage, and price point. Bottles are covered to ensure impartiality, and judges assess no more than 90 wines per day to avoid palate fatigue. Results are published online and in the September issue of Decanter as a standalone supplement.
