"To Love Somebody" is a covers album by Nina Simone, released quickly after her unexpected hit "Nuff Said!" to capitalize on its success. The title comes from the Bee Gees' song "To Love Somebody," which Simone covered and turned into her second British hit single following "Ain't Got No, I Got Life." The album features primarily cover songs but includes one original track, "Revolution," written by Weldon Irvine and Simone. This song was split into two parts for its release as a single in the UK. Although it did not chart well in the UK or gain significant success in the U.S., it drew comparisons to the Beatles' "Revolution" due to similar hooks and structure. John Lennon commented on these similarities, noting he appreciated Simone's interpretation.

The album includes Nina Simone's vocals and piano performances alongside contributions from Don Alias (drums), Weldon J. Irvine (organ), Al Schackman (guitar), and Gene A. Perla (Fender bass). Additional backing vocals are provided by Doris Willingham and Virdia Crawford. The track listing features covers of songs by Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, and the Beatles, including an alternate version of "Turn! Turn! Turn!" that was previously unreleased. Simone's arrangements and Jimmy Wisner's conducting add to the album's layered sound.
