The Spotlight Newspapers is a group of three weekly newspapers serving suburban communities in New York State's Capital District. The history of the group began with *The Spotlight*, which first appeared on December 1, 1955, as a four-page penny saver in Delmar, New York. Founded by Mrs. Charles E. Walsh, Jr., the paper initially operated from a residential address. Tracy Walsh sold the paper to Robert G. King, a former advertising salesman for the *Times Union*, in 1957. Nathaniel A. Boynton purchased the paper in 1975 and introduced a full-coverage news policy, ending free distribution and focusing on subscription sales. Richard Ahlstrom acquired the paper in 1980, transforming it into an 11-by-15-inch tabloid format to increase news and photo content. Ahlstrom also launched editions for Colonie and Loudonville. In 1998, the papers were sold to Eagle Newspapers, forming Spotlight, LLC, which expanded the group to include 12 weekly newspapers across various communities by 2007. The company also began publishing two monthly magazines: *Capital District Parent Pages* and *Capital District Senior Spotlight*. On October 1, 2009, Spotlight Newspapers and Eagle Newspapers were sold to Community Media Group, LLC. Throughout its history, *The Spotlight* has focused on local news, with limited coverage of national events in its early decades.
